Project Background:

Empowered communities and CSOs for inclusive nutrition governance in the hilly and mountain regions of Western Nepal project is consortium-based project, in which LIBIRD is lead organization in consortium and implementing project in Bajura District, WAC Nepal is local counterpartner for Achham District and WHH Nepal is as a technical support. The project is funded by the European Union. The project will facilitate and increase the access to public quality nutrition services for socially and economically disadvantaged, and marginalized population groups including people with disabilities (PWD).

Overall objective:

To strengthen a sustainable and inclusive nutrition governance for an effective and efficient implementation of the Multi-Sector Nutrition Plan (MSNP III, 2023 – 2030) by facilitating pathways to improved nutrition through fostering knowledge and awareness for elected local government representatives, service providers as well as for citizens and CBOs representing disadvantaged groups, in combination with community and women’s empowerment are proposed among the pathways to improved nutrition and lie at the heart of engagement of all three organizations in their varied capacities and experiences to work for striving communities in the hilly and mountain areas of Western Nepal. The project contributes to the overall effectiveness of the MSNP III with specific contributions to MSNP III’s outcome 2 (equitable access and use of safe, healthy and nutritious food); outcome 3 (nutrition friendly local governance) and outcome 4 (knowledge, behavior and practices improvement).

Project Outcome:

Inclusive governance for local food systems and equitable access to high quality nutrition services in 10 municipalities of Achham and Bajura districts of Sudurpaschim Province

  • Output 1: Local governments and multisectoral service providers are strengthened in effectively practicing inclusive nutrition friendly local governance.
  • Output 2: Strengthened community-based organizations (CBOs) / networks and empowered citizens (focusing on women and youth) in nutrition advocacy and policy influence to deliver quality services at sub-national levels.
  • Output 3: Targeted households have enhanced their Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) on socially and culturally accepted local solutions for better nutrition security for all.
  • Working Area:5 Palika ie:Sanfebagar Municipality,Mangalsen Municipality,Bannighadi Rural Municipality,Mellekh Rural Municipality and Chaurpati Rural Municipality.

Activities:

  • Strengthen and support in activating municipal and ward level nutrition and food security steering committees and organize ex-changes, knowledge-sharing and best practices among local governments.
  • Participatory organization assessment of CBOs, provide leadership and advocacy training towards access and delivery of quality nutrition services.
  • Capacitate CBOs/community leaders on nutrition sensitive micro planning to advocate and engage towards quality nutrition services.
  • Establish community-based nutrition sensitive coordination and monitoring mechanism using different participatory tools such as community score card, public hearing and social audit.
  • Support, mobilize and link CBOs/networks to local government committees and provincial networks such as CSANN and Right to Food Network for evidence-based advocacy and engagement
  • Conduct Nutrition Education through LANN+ (Linking Agriculture and Natural Resources Management plus WASH towards Nutrition Security) Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) sessions
  • Promote and support home and community nutrition gardens through providing training on nutrition, friendly agroecological and climate resilient agriculture practices and farming techniques (seeds, bio inputs, livestock, etc.

Beneficiary Criteria: Deprived people with socio-economic vulnerability, Children under 5 years of age, Community based organization (CBOs) led by women and youth, Local authorities and Cooperatives (especially engaged in agriculture).
